    • 📖 Recipe

We like making honey butter for special occasions, like Thanksgiving and the holidays. It is so delicious smeared all over a warm dinner roll, homemade cornbread, or a flaky biscuit.

I don’t think our Thanksgiving table would be complete without some homemade honey butter for biscuits and cornbread. It is creamy, smooth, sweet and a little bit salty, and it pairs well with so many things.

    What's Cool About This Recipe

    • Only 3 ingredients: You only need 3 ingredients to make the base of this whipped honey butter, then you can add extra flavors if you want (see variations section below)
    • Easy to make: Once your butter is softened, you can have honey butter in less than 5 minutes.
    • No powdered sugar: A lot of honey butter recipes have powdered sugar in them, but ours is made without powdered sugar.

    Ingredients and Substitutions

Ingredients for homemade honey butter in original containers on a tray.
    • Butter: We use unsalted butter and add our own salt. You can use salted butter, just leave out the salt.
    • Honey: Use high quality pure honey for best results.
    • Salt: Salt will offset the sweetness of the honey. If you’re using salted butter then you don’t need to add any salt.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Variations

You can add flavorings to the honey butter, like:

    • Cinnamon
    • Vanilla
    • Pumpkin pie spice
    • Orange zest

What to Serve With Honey Butter

Some great vessels to carry all that delicious honey butter to your mouth are:

    • Homemade rolls
    • Fluffy biscuits
    • Homemade cornbread
    • Pumpkin spice muffins
    • On whole wheat artisan bread
    • Warm whole wheat carrot cake
    • Toss with roasted sweet potatoes or carrots

    Storage

Store leftover honey butter covered in the refrigerator. As long as it doesn’t get softened and re-refrigerated multiple times (it will develop an unpleasant, rancid flavor) it will stay good for a couple weeks.

    How to Freeze

Freeze in an airtight, freezer safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator, or at room temperature if you’re going to use it all within a day.

    Tips From Our Kitchen

If you need to soften your butter quickly, cut it into cubes or thin slices and it will soften much faster.

Honey butter is best enjoyed fresh. Although you can store it in the refrigerator, it is not as good once it is softened again.

    FAQ

What is honey butter made of?

Honey butter, as the name suggests, is made with butter and honey. It is usually whipped together until smooth and fluffy. It sometimes contains other flavorings like cinnamon, vanilla, salt and some recipes include powdered sugar (ours does not).
