Apples are great for using in low sugar desserts because they contain a lot of natural sweetness, making it so you can cut down on added sugar and still have a sweet tasting dessert. This easy apple crisp has a buttery crisp topping baked over sweet and spiced apples. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
4cups peeled and choppedapples (½” pieces)4 medium apples
3tablespoons (45g)cool water
1tablespoon(15g)lemon juice
2teaspoon(2teaspoon)cornstarch
1teaspoon(1teaspoon)ground cinnamon
⅛teaspoon(⅛teaspoon)ground nutmeg
¾cup(96g)whole white wheat flourhard white wheat
¾cup(90g)rolled oatsnot thick cut
⅓cup packed(70g)brown sugar
½cup(113g)butter, melted
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375°
Place 4 cups peeled and chopped apples (½” pieces), 3 tablespoons cool water, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 2 teaspoon cornstarch, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon and ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg in a large mixing bowl. Toss together until the apples are evenly coated. Pour into a 9x9 inch baking dish.
Combine ¾ cup whole white wheat flour, ¾ cup rolled oats, ⅓ cup packed brown sugar and ½ cup butter, melted in a small mixing bowl.
Spread evenly over the apples.
Bake for 30-40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
Notes
You can use whole wheat flour, whole wheat pastry flour or whole spelt flour in place of the whole white wheat flour. We like Fuji or Gala apples
